The farm

The applicant’s story

My name is Daniel. I run a small family farm on the outskirts of La Jolla, California, where we grow maize on a few acres alongside seasonal vegetables. Every season starts before sunrise with checking irrigation, monitoring soil moisture, and making sure the young corn plants stay healthy. This year has been especially challenging. Higher water costs, aging irrigation equipment, and rising fertilizer prices have made it harder to keep production stable. We are trying to improve water efficiency while maintaining the quality of our harvest. Our goal is to upgrade our irrigation system and purchase better soil monitoring equipment so we can reduce water waste and grow healthier crops. Farming has been part of our family's life for years, and we hope to continue producing fresh maize for our local community.

The request

What the funding would support

Supplier estimate: $140 Farm contribution: $40 Uncovered amount: $100, to be paid to a local irrigation supplier. This support will pay for replacement drip lines, connectors, a pressure regulator, and a basic soil-moisture meter for our maize plot. Several parts of our current irrigation setup are worn and leak during watering, which wastes water and leaves some rows unevenly irrigated. We need the materials before August 16 so we can repair the system during the current growing season. My family and I will install the parts, check the lines each morning, and maintain the equipment throughout the season.
